His Story
Today, we remember and celebrate that extraordinary life. He told the world that impossible is just the beginning, then spent a lifetime proving it. This is his story, told in eleven chapters.
Chapter One
The Boy from the Himalayas
“Every legend has an ordinary beginning”
Born in Dana, in the shadow of Dhaulagiri, to a Gurkha father and a farmer’s daughter whose marriage crossed caste lines and cost them both their families. There was so little that Nimsdai remembered owning no flip-flops at all. His three older brothers sent home their Gurkha wages so the youngest could attend the school none of them ever had.
Chapter Two
Becoming a Gurkha
“A boy’s dream becomes reality”
Before he ever dreamed of mountains, he dreamed of the uniform his father and brothers wore. At twenty, he earned it. The Gurkhas gave him discipline, brotherhood, and calm under pressure, and deployments to Afghanistan tested all three.
Chapter Three
The One Who Believed First
“Every summit had her behind it”
He married Suchi Purja, the daughter of another Gurkha soldier, and far more than a wife: the first believer, the steady ground beneath a life lived at altitude, and later a builder of Elite Exped beside him. Together they built a family. Their daughter, Himani, knew him not as the man on the posters, but as the father who taught her to ski.
Chapter Four
The Impossible Standard
“Always one step further”
In 2009 he became the first Gurkha ever selected for the Special Boat Service, one of the most demanding special forces units on earth. Cold-weather warfare specialist. Years of service that remain classified. What he carried out of it was a conviction: preparation, teamwork, and calm thinking win impossible situations.
Chapter Five
Discovering the Mountains
“Finding the path he never expected”
On leave in 2012, he trekked to Everest Base Camp, and something shifted. Weeks later he stood on Lobuche East with almost no climbing experience. Two years on, Dhaulagiri: his first 8,000er, and the same mountain that had shadowed his childhood village. Most elite climbers start as teenagers. Nimsdai started at twenty-nine, and caught them all.
Chapter Six
Betting Everything
“The greatest risk wasn’t the mountain”
To attempt what nobody believed possible, he walked away from one of the world’s most prestigious military careers. Sponsors said no; nobody knew his name yet. So he remortgaged the family home and staked everything he and Suchi had built on a plan the world called impossible. She never blinked.
Chapter Seven
Project Possible
“Changing what humanity believed was possible”
Fourteen mountains above 8,000 metres. The record stood at nearly eight years; he announced seven months. Through Nepal, Pakistan and Tibet: storms, exhaustion, and pauses in his own record attempt to rescue strangers, because no summit was worth more than a life. On 29 October 2019, day 189: all fourteen.

Chapter Eight
Changing Mountaineering Forever
“The world finally noticed”
The book became a bestseller; the film carried his story to millions. In the dead of winter 2021, K2, mountaineering’s last great prize, fell to an all-Nepali team singing their way through the final metres together. And he kept saying the thing he’d always said: Nepali climbers are not support staff. They are the elite.
Chapter Nine
Beyond the Mountains
“Helping others reach their own summits”
With Elite Exped he built what he wished had existed: expeditions led by the strongest climbers on earth, run with Special Forces discipline, taking ordinary people to extraordinary places. He mentored, he spoke on the world’s stages, and he kept breaking his own records, including all fourteen 8,000ers again, without supplemental oxygen.

Chapter Ten
One Last Expedition
“Still chasing the horizon”
He never learned to coast. In July 2026 he stood on his 57th summit above 8,000 metres, more than anyone in history, and days later he was on Broad Peak, in the mountains he loved most, when the avalanche came. He was 43.
Chapter Eleven
Nothing Is Impossible
“A legacy that continues to climb”
He changed how the world sees Nepali climbers: from the background of other people’s photographs to the front of the rope. Through Suchi and their daughter Himani, through the team he built and every stranger he told to dream big, the belief he lived by keeps climbing: with the right mindset, the right preparation and the right team, nothing is impossible.
Eleven chapters later, the word means what he always said it meant. Impossible is just the beginning.

Beyond the Summit
The Nimsdai Foundation
“For the mountains, and those who rely on them”
Nimsdai never forgot who carried him. In 2022 he made giving back permanent.
His greatest legacy will not be measured in metres.
He sent children to school
the way his brothers once sent him.
He gave porters a roof of their own
dignity for the people who carry every expedition.
He cleaned the mountains that made his name
hauling other people’s waste down from the peaks.
He stood with villages when the floods came
and stayed after the cameras left.
Above + Beyond + Always
The legacy continues
His legacy cannot be measured only in summits, records or world firsts. It lives in the people he inspired to dream bigger, in Nepal's climbing community he championed on the world stage, and in everyone who found the courage to challenge their own limits.
