Cho Oyu /
Shishapangma

Climb among the
Tibetan Gods.

Shishapangma &
Cho Oyu Expedition

Shishapangma, whose name means “God of the Grasslands”, is the world’s 14th highest mountain, and the only 8,000er that lies entirely in Tibet. Cho Oyu, which translates as “Turquoise Goddess” in Tibetan, straddles the border between Tibet and Nepal, but is easiest to climb from the northern, Tibetan side. Among the world’s 8,000m peaks, both are regarded as relatively easy. Tackling these two sacred mountains together is challenging, but possible.

Aimed at skilled and supremely fit climbers who’ve made multiple ascents of 6,000m and 7,000m peaks. You must have mastered mountaineering skills.

Climb the two sacred mountains

Despite standing an imposing 8,188m above sea level, Cho Oyu, the world’s sixth highest mountain is actually a relatively straightforward climb. Its flat summit plateau, and the relatively gentle slopes approaching it don’t require the same level of technical climbing expertise that, say, Kanchenjunga or Makalu do. Alongside Shishapangma, it’s often the first 8,000m peaks that climbers tackle, and the relatively proximity of the two peaks means that climbing them one after the other, in a single expedition, makes perfect sense.

Beginning with Shishapangma, we aim to summit both peaks within 54 days, an objective that’s made feasible not just by the relative ease of the climbs, but by the accessibility of the base camps - both are reachable by motor vehicle, reducing the need for arduous treks in or out. Our expedition plans are based on those successfully implemented by our leaders, Nimsdai and Mingma David, during the former’s record breaking Project Possible push of 2019.

Elite Exped’s approach to expedition planning means that we control every aspect of the trip, from the food provision to the fixing of ropes. We leave nothing to chance, controlling the controllable to ensure that the expedition runs as smoothly as possible. It’s this attention to detail that allows us to move quickly, and you to achieve ambitious objectives, like summiting two 8,000m peaks back to back.

While our directors have built their reputations on climbing at speed, they have never once compromised on safety. When working together, they have a 100 percent success record on 8,000m peaks, but also a 100 percent safety record - every member of every one of their teams has returned home, without so much as a single digit lost to frostbite. We operate a guaranteed, 1:1 guide to client ratio, with four additional Sherpas on standby, ready to help out in case of emergencies.

Like our leaders, all Elite Exped guides are trained in high altitude rescue and recovery techniques, and our team has a history of coming to the aid of other expeditions in need. We have helicopters accessible round the clock, and evacuation plans in place. Tackling two of the world’s highest mountains back to back is physically demanding. Both in the run-up to the expedition, during the climbs and between the two summits, we will keep a constant eye on progress, allowing us to all-important decisions around client safety. Simply put, you could not be in safer hands when attempting these two, majestic peaks back to back.

Manaslu 2019

Manaslu was my first 8,000er and first time with Elite. They exceeded my expectations at every level and stage.  I would have no hesitation in booking with them again! Highly recommended!!!

Amy McCulloch
Aconcagua 2018

I often felt they went above and beyond to ensure we had a successful expedition. Excellent judgments throughout the expedition led us to reach the summit safely in extreme conditions. Highly recommend!

Why choose
Elite Exped?

Unparalleled
leadership

Nimsdai Purja and Mingma David Sherpa’s mountaineering world records speak for themselves, but our founders are more than just supremely-talented climbers. While some choose to direct operations from a back office, Nimsdai and Mingma David lead from the front. Their experience of every aspect of guiding and climbing - from fixing ropes, to organising logistics - is unparalleled. It’s no surprise that when they’ve worked together they have a perfect, 100 percent success rate when it comes to summiting 8,000m peaks.

Safety through
self-sufficiency

If it’s controllable we control it, this is key to attain and maintain our industry leading strategy for success and safety. We maximise our options, agility and responsiveness by running totally self-sufficient expeditions, not relying on any other teams on the mountain to achieve our objectives. We are capable of setting up our own fixed lines (with a proven track record on all 8,000m peaks) and have backups to cover all scenarios, from secondary oxygen supplies through to the ability and experience to operate our own rescue missions if the situation arises.

A unique
perspective

With his Nepalese roots, and UK residency, our co-founder Nimsdai Purja brings a unique perspective of the world of mountaineering, and an unparalleled ability to bridge the gap between Western and Himalayan climbing cultures. We can assemble trusted teams and networks anywhere in the world, but our founders’ roots are a particular advantage when it comes to summiting the world’s very highest peaks. An intimate knowledge of how things work on the ground ensures that everything runs smoothly when you’re 8,000m above sea-level.

This expedition offers you the chance to conquer two of the Karakorum’s most iconic peaks in the space of a single summer climbing season.

Named for the Hindu Goddess of food and nourishment, who is said to live among its summits, Annapurna is a vast massif in central Nepal whose highest peak sits at 8,091m, making it the world’s 10th highest mountain. Makalu is the world’s fifth-highest mountain, a near-perfect pyramid of rock and ice thrusting 8,463m into the sky over the Nepalese - Tibetan border. This combination expedition will allow you to climb both in the space of a single spring climbing season - a huge achievement.
